Passenger injuries » Monitoring driver quality

Many of us opt to take the bus or train to work every morning and would like to be safe in the knowledge that we wont sustain serious passenger injuries, or worse, on route.

The time has come when those travelling by bus and coach may be able to sit back and relax without worrying about being jolted in a bus crash, rushed to Accident and Emergency or having to make a subsequent personal injury claim.

Monitoring public transport

A new road safety initiative has been devised in collaboration with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to monitor the driving ability of professional drivers and, in turn, help to protect those that travel via public transport vehicles.

The Driver Quality Monitoring service (DQM) is designed to provide an objective and informed perspective of bus and coach drivers aptitude by assessing specific aspects of passenger consideration, customer service and driving ability. Suggestions for ways that their employers could achieve high safety standards are then made.

Assessments are made by qualified and experienced DSA examiners who travel onboard anonymously. Data obtained from all assessments is stored in a central database so that the quality and standards of the drivers can be checked regularly and maintained. The specific objectives of the service are as follows:

  • To improve and increase the general awareness of road safety
  • To reduce passenger, pedestrian and road accidents
  • To contribute to an overall reduction in insurance claims and premiums
  • To address public concerns about driving standards identified through correspondence, accidents and surveys
  • To stimulate driver awareness of driving and road safety issues and the effect these have on customer service
  • To identify and specify the driver training needs of organisations and individuals
