Medical negligence » AvMA and medical negligence

If you or a family member has been affected by medical negligence, it may well have been an upsetting experience for everybody concerned. Each year in the UK, thousands of people sustain personal injuries as a result of medical accidents by doctors, specialists and other professionals who had a duty to ensure their safety.

People who have been through a difficult time following medical negligence are often helped by the support of others. Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) is a charity that has been specially set up to assist people who have suffered as a result of a medical accident, either negligent or not.

AvMA was founded as Action for the Victims of Medical Accidents in 1982, although its name was changed to its current form in 2003. Over 100,000 people have benefited from the services this charity provides and its first chief executive was awarded an OBE in 2000 following years of successful action for those who have suffered medical negligence.

The role of AvMA

AvMA focuses on getting justice for patients and preventing similar accidents happening again in the future. On a patient level, this is achieved through providing specialist medico-legal advice and supporting people through the sometimes complex system of medical complaints.

AvMA is also active in helping people to get the best representation should they choose to make a compensation claim. It is authorised by the Legal Services Commission to appoint personal injury solicitors with specialist knowledge of medical negligence claims so that those claiming can get a just result.

More broadly, AvMA campaigns for change in the law regarding medical negligence in order to increase the level of patient safety. It has been an influential factor in the creation of the National Patient Safety Agency and the Commission for Health Audit and Inspection.

AvMA has most recently been campaigning for changes to be made to the Redress Bill, which would provide help for people who have suffered less serious personal injuries through medical negligence. Following amendments in the House of Commons, which marked a success for AvMA, this Bill is due to be finalised in October 2006.
